GETTING AROUND VIETNAM
With many transport options, you can find the best and suitable one for yourselves in every tourist stop in
Vietnam, either by plane, bus, and boat or bicycle.
By Plane
For long distances or limited travel duration, flying is a good idea but often more expensive option compared
to trains and buses. The main domestic airlines are Vietnam Airlines and Jetstar Pacific Airlines which offer
regular services between major cities; flying time between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City is around 2 hours.
It’s always cheaper to purchase domestic tickets within Vietnam. Domestic departure tax is included in
most fares.
By Train
If time isn’t an issue, Vietnam train travel is a relaxed way to adventure. The journeys can take longer than
by bus but offer more leg room and are generally less crowded. The most popular hops are from Hanoi
up to Sapa, where deluxe/ luxury trains with dining cars cover the route, or from Hanoi down the coast to the
old capital of Hue and from there to Danang (less popular) or all the way to Nha Trang and Ho Chi Minh.
Improved road travel is making the train obsolete in most parts, except for the mountainous far north. There
are a number of classes, from third-class hard seat to air-conditioned cushioned seat to sleeper, but in
general the more comfortable seats are affordable. Be warned that you need to book trains a few days in
advance, especially for weekend travel.

By taxi
Perhaps the best taxi service in the world exists in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City; the taxis are new, reliable and
economical. Always take a metered taxi. Some taxi companies:
M Taxi - 3822-2666 Hanoi Taxi - 38535-353
Mai Linh Taxi - 3822-6699 Mai Linh Taxi - 3822-2666
Vina Taxi - 3811-1111 Taxi CP - 3826-2626
By Bus
Vietnam has an extensive bus network in place and cheap fares but the buses are all too often overcrowded
and road safety is dubious. Local buses depart from stations usually a good distance from the town center
(it usually requires a ride on the back of a motorbike taxi to get there). All buses honk wildly as they navigate
the chaotic traffic of Vietnam's bumpy roads, and all transport travels at a lumbering 50kmph (31 mph).
Aimed at the tourist trade, Open Tour Buses are inexpensive, more comfortable buses that you can catch
from each town going from Hanoi south, all the way to Ho Chi Minh City. Although a pleasurable way to travel,
it can feel like a tourist bubble rather than an experience of the real Vietnam. Buses are usually in pretty good
shape and have air-conditioning, but it can be a pretty unpleasant cattle-herding situation among lots of
complaining backpackers. Buses stop only at big tourist-shopping complexes, and you get little interaction
with locals. Minibuses are also plentiful but can be irritatingly slow with numerous pick ups and drop offs.
That said, these tour buses are good for short hops between cities.
By other local vehicles: Cyclo, xe Om
Cyclos, three-wheeled bicycles, are an alternative way of traversing city streets and can be hired for a full day.
For a more high-powered mode of transport, Honda Oms, motorbikes whereby the passenger sits behind
the driver, are also plentiful. For both modes, it’s best to have a pen and paper to hand to write down your
destination and agree on a fare prior to the journey. Bicycle rentals can be made through your tour company
or through the concierge or front desk of your hotel.
